Sometimes referred to as ‘screw piles’, helical piles are a form of pile identifiable by a helix-like shape. This helical shape can form the whole length of the pile or only part of it. This construction method is a deep foundation solution using the process of ground anchoring. The pile is screwed into the ground to the target depth and then filled with concrete by our helical pile contractors.
Installation of helical piles can be done quickly by our helical pile contractors with the right equipment. At Dart & Co we use a Comacchio MC4 drilling rig, allowing us to wound the pile into the ground with sufficient power.
The process requires little disturbance to the neighbours and to the site. Low levels of noise and zero vibrations ensure this. Uninstalling is also a simple process, meaning relocating a pile if needed can be done easily.
Helical piles can be loaded immediately after installation, making them unique to other piling methods. The engineering of the piles makes them suitable to support smaller or larger structures. They are able to support less than 1 kilonewton or more than 5,000 kilonewtons. This variability makes them suitable for many projects.
A major benefit of helical piles is their longevity. They are estimated to last between 75 and 150 years. The capacity of the piles actually increases over time, making it a reliable investment. Soil conditions are the biggest factor in how long the piles will last. Soil that is highly acidic and quickly eroding will cause damage to the pile over years, shortening its life span. Soil movement also affects durability. Coastal areas or mountainous areas may cause helical piles to not last as long, due to the ground movement.
They do not have a maximum depth however the structure of the piles means they do not need to be very deep to sufficiently bear the weight. 12-14 metres is the general length of how deep they need to be, past this will be practical issues.
