Piling refers to a technique used in construction to create deep foundations for structures, especially in situations where the soil near the surface might not be suitable to support the weight of a building. It involves driving long, slender columns or piles deep into the ground to transfer the load of the building to deeper, more stable soil or rock layers.
Driven Piles: These are piles made of materials like concrete, steel, or timber that are driven into the ground using specialized equipment such as pile drivers. The driving force compacts the soil around the pile, providing support.
Bored Piles: These are created by drilling holes into the ground and then filling them with concrete or placing a prefabricated pile in the hole. They’re often used in situations where noise or vibration from pile driving is a concern.
Piling is used for foundation support, to help transfer the load of a building to stronger, more stable soil or rock layers deep beneath the ground, ensuring the stability and safety of the structure. Piling can also be used to stabilise the soil in areas prone to shifting, settling, or where the soil’s load-bearing capacity is insufficient. Piling allows construction in areas with high water tables, soft soils, or where shallow bedrock might otherwise hinder traditional foundation methods.
